Social Spidering

Who says you have to have a huge advertising budget in order to get your name out there? Maybe a few years ago - but not anymore.

Today - you have social networks who’ll do a fine job getting your name out there - with some effort by you - for no or low cost.

You decide what network encompasses your audience, sign up, create a profile, participate and offer valuable information and content. Now do that on a regular basis - and Google will find out.

Oh - and don’t forget - repeat! Not just one network - but a web of them. You can even create your own on sites like Ning.com. Either for your clients or for your suppliers or both! Your imagination sets the limits…and your time.

Because in order to network efficiently - you have to time-block. Otherwise it’s too easy to either neglect your networks or spend so much time on them, that the “real” stuff involved in doing business, like providing services or products, gets neglected.

Want to add one more layer? Start a blog. Keep everyone updates with what’s new with your business, in your industry and how to use your services and/or products. Same applies - schedule time for this. Don’t do it randomly - be persistent - and yes - tell people about your blog. (If they don’t know - how would you like them to find it?)

Do you have a service or product that you could make videos about? You’ve got it made - your next layer could be YouTube. Think it’s only for teenagers? Check out all the How to and Business Videos that have found a home there…(those same videos that can then be linked to your social sites or your blog…)

See how that whole spider-thing works? Give it a try! And let me know which part your like the most!

  1. Thanks for including a link to Business and Blogging in your post. I must admit, the term “social spidering” is new to me - atlhough, I’ve heard of web spiders.

  2. Laura,
You’re very welcome. I thought it was a good fit!

  3. [...] think joining an online network is similar to that. You join the site, you might add the basics to your profile -just enough so [...]

  4. Using Social spidering to promote your website is economical but can be time consuming without data portability. All your efforts may be in vain especially when you join social networks that employ ” No follow ” tags.

Try to look for ” Do follow ” tagged sites and ask for professional SEO help if needed. As a web designer and a Search engine optimization specialist myself I help people with such matters.

  5. Daniel,

I agree on the “No follow” tags - and also that having help from a SEO Pro is great.

I do think tho - that just being involved in social networks, making connections, being helpful, interesting and most of all interested in others will gain you benefits as well.

I think eventually I’ll have to add an ‘explanation’ to the above post - that while the spidering allows you get your name out there - the ’social’ aspect is what allows other’s to get to know you.
