Getting To Know You…
It’s almost been a week since our exchange student arrived, and like anyone experiencing something new, she’s getting used to our routine and she participates.
Same thing happens after you join an online community. After not knowing anything about the network, you start surfing, maybe leaving comments, asking questions and posting items.
And amazingly enough - you find out that the more you participate, the better you like it. Why? Because you are giving others a chance to meet you - regardless if it’s offline or online. It’s all net-working. And you only ‘get back’ what you ‘put in’. If you lurk, ignore or flame - don’t expect other’s to come flocking to you. They don’t know you!
So, keep participating, find some groups that you like, post interesting materials and be a part of the community - give more than you receive - follow up - be interested. Heck, who knows - we might meet!
Now my questions to you are:
-
What were your experiences when you first joined a networklike LinkedIn, Facebook, Ning or any of the others?
-
What would you do differently now, if you could do it over? Or would you not make any changes?
-
What advice would you offer to ”Newbies”?

My advice is to try a lot of social networks, meaning sign up. But truthfully I think three or four is the most you can really work (if you have a full time job that is lol) But you don’t know until you get into it if it suits you or your needs. Plus certain ones like facebook and linkedin and squidoo are winners…….as far as meeting a lot of people. Twitter is something I would recommend to everyone.
Carole,
So true. I find that regardless of invitations received, or new networks created - I have a limit - that I’m not willing to breach - because time won’t allow it. (Now of course, if someone would pay me to just “hang out” on different networks….different story…
On Facebook, take the time to fill out the social timeline
I really didn’t see value with social media sites when I first signed up. I’m most active on Stumbleupon but I didn’t do anything for several months after signing up. I’ve been using Twitter more recently but I had written it off when I first checked it out. I have found that social media sites can add a lot of value but it’s easy to spend too much time.
